Smoove & Turrell
Had a great time with Smoove & Turrell last night. Nu-funk legend, producer, DJ and live performer Smoove has found his vocal match in blue-eyed soulsinger John Turrell. Superb live performance!
For the city of Groningen Gerard van der Kaap created these billboards with text (in dialect) and images reflecting on the fast changing boarders of the city in relation to its surrounding landscape. The billboards changed every three months.

No “i” in Thnk.
Launched this year THNK, The Amsterdam School of Creative Leadership offers a post-graduate program designed to “provoke and inspire professionals, entrepreneurs and scientists into becoming the world’s next creative leaders.” The identity for the school has been created by Amsterdam-based Lava. For me one of the best new identities this year so far.

Gradient and guitar pick shape?
TNT Post, the official mail carrier in The Netherlands, owned by the TNT Group who also operate TNT Express, started to work as an independent company on May 31 and was renamed PostNL. The new logo was designed by VBAT. Although I admire most of their work, I can't help feeling that it lacks a little creativity considering what we've seen from Total Design (now Total Identity) and Studio Dumbar in the past.

A meditation on womenhood
For years concert pianist and artist Tomoko Mukaiyama worked on a remarkable art project called 'Wasted', that can be seen as a requiem for women's potential to give life. She created a cathedral-like space out of thousands of white dresses in which visitors roamed around, fell silent and confessed intimate details that she then used as inspiration to make improvisations on Bach's Goldberg Variations. (photo's taken in 2010 at the Kruythuis in Groningen)
Filmmaker Aliona van der Horst followed her trail and explored Buddhist rituals of fertility and transience like the moving ritual of the 'water children'. From July 14 the documentary film 'Water Children' is screened in movie theaters across the Netherlands.

VPRO Guide cover contest
Now that we have until the first of july to vote for the favorite cover of the weekly VPRO TV guide, the covers that Krista van der Niet made for the guide, seem to have some similarity with the work of Levi van Veluw, who's latest work is really outstanding! My own favorite cover is the one by Johan Kessels.

Letman script
The short introduction on his website says: 'He is cuckoo about letters, he loves them'. The fabulous handmade typography of Job Wouters is very refreshing. Last year he did the lettering of a fashion event called Modefabriek (photography by Philippe Vogelenzang) and I just love the work he did for Gijs Frieling.
