Rubbish dump becomes protected area
During the early 20th century residents of Fort Bragg, California used to dispose of their waste by dumping it off the cliffs above a beach. In 1967 the area was closed and cleaned up, except for the millions of tiny glass shards that were too costly and impossible to tackle. Over time the ocean waves have cleansed the beach, turning the sand into a sparkling bed of multicolored glass stones now known as Glass Beach.
